The role of parents in the academic success of their children in Uganda: a case study of two selected schools in Madera Parish, Soroti Catholic Diocese

Abstract

The study is precisely theological and specifically categorized under pastoral theology. The general objective is assessing the roles of parents in the academic success of their children in Uganda: a case study of two selected schools in Madera parish, Soroti Catholic Diocese. The other three objectives include: assessing the parental involvement in the academic success of their children, identifying the challenges in the parental involvement in the academic success of their children and finding solutions to the challenges in the parental involvement in the academic success of their children. The data collection methods encompassed techniques that were adopted by the researcher to procure information from the field. The researcher used questionnaires and interview guide as the major tools for collecting data. The major findings that were found was that parents have a noble duty of assisting their children as they strive for academic success. They have a duty of paying their school fees, availing the scholastic materials, closely supervising them, helping in the doing of home works among other duties, these were common in both the literature review and the field findings. The main challenges that were pointed out comprised of poverty/financial constraints, alcoholism, ignorance of the significance of education, poor relationships between teacher and parents among others. In the same vein, some solutions were put across that is to say: sensitization of parents on the value of education and the roles of parents, provision of short-term loans to mitigate poverty and finding ways for a better collaboration between the parents and the teachers reconciliation being the remedy. As the conclusion it was arrived that, parents have a major role to play in towards the educational success of their children however other parties such as the teachers and the children themselves have a noble duty to play in their pursuit for success. In line with recommendations, the key ones revolved around parents being responsible and being responsible means being committed in doing all that it takes as a way of their children achieving academic success.
